Re: Winners for TOURIST TRAP Challenge

Oh my goodness. Really? REALLY?? I thought this entry was "terrible" at first. I just didn't turn out quite how I imagined, I thought it was "clunky" and I thought I repeated myself or the same idea too much. But apparently not! Wow. That was a nice surprise. *picks jaw up from floor*

Re: Pacific Coast Rest-Stop

Deejay, did you know if you work for 10 years (I think it has to be 30 hours a week) in a public service job (nonprofit company but doesn't have to be certain jobs, it could be anything from being a janitor at Red Cross or a teacher in a public school) they will cancel out your student loans. I can...

Re: Pacific Coast Rest-Stop

Poor Little Bird has been in a lot of pain and I saw her in a neck brace during online bible group. :( Was it from an ongoing complication, or did she hurt herself? Let her know I was thinking about her. She's been having neck and shoulder pain, due to her condition, and it was suggested a few mont...

Re: Pacific Coast Rest-Stop

I'm not sure Allison. I asked him about it a little bit ago. Right now he is working as a youth director at a small church in NC. I think it'll depend on what's going on with the group at that time. He's really enjoying it. We went down to hear Him this past weekend. He has grown so much. It's made...

Re: Be a Better Writer--SO MANY WRITING TIPS

"Avoid starting a piece with dialogue." Why? What's wrong with using a bit of dialogue as a hook into a story? Okay. So Jan posted while I was writing this, and pretty much said what I was going to say, but I have an example of what Jan says about "meeting" the characters. When you start right off ...

Re: Be a Better Writer--PACING

Jane goes to the beach after the gaudy display of sunset has faded. She prefers the deepening sky, the long shadows of scrubby vegetation, the breath of waves on the shore. A blanket is in her bag, and a few ripe plums. She looks out on the water for a long time, mostly not thinking at all. There is...

Re: Be a Better Writer--CHOOSING A POV CHARACTER

Well, I am one who uses animals somewhat frequently. I have also used inanimate objects as my POV at least twice. I was going to to my "pebbles" story, but Jan already posted one she wrote from the exact same POV. So perhaps it's not as unique as I thought. I also did one from the POV of the wall(s)...

Re: Be a Better Writer--SHE WRITES IN THIRD PERSON

Do you think it's safe to say that fantasy is commonly written in third person omniscient, maybe even more so than third person limited? To me, it makes sense in fantasy novels, because you need to get sense of an entire new world, and one character's POV isn't going to give you that whole world per...
