You have asked me why you should accept the Bible as an authority on matters concerning God and salvation.
I can tell you with 100% confidence that the Bible is not simply AN authority but THE absolute and complete authority concerning God and salvation. Not only that, but it is also the definitive guide on how we as God’s created beings, are to live our lives. I base this on numerous factors beginning with the ultimate fact that the Bible states it is the inspired, infallible word of God. As the infallible word it contains everything you and I need to know about God and how we are to be reconciled with Him, which is also known as salvation.
You might say this is circular reasoning. How can I say that just because the Bible asserts it is the authoritative word, this truly means it is so? For something to have authority it simply means it is the highest possible standard that we are to look to.
The Bible’s self attestation in 2 Timothy 3:16 ESV – “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,” is not circular at all- it merely states the fact that is it is the inspired word of God, therefore it cannot have any higher authority or proof. It is self-evident and self-attesting.
For something to have authority it must be the final word on the issue. The evidence displayed in history, fulfilled prophecy, and archaeological findings verify the Bibles credibility, as well as the testimony of millions of transformed lives verifying its true and powerful nature. Its 66 books written by 40 authors over a period of 1500 years and its integrity have been proven repeatedly through uncountable human experiences and reliance on its truth. It has been proven to be accurate by thousands of pieces of manuscript evidence. It has been examined thoroughly and never to be found false, God cannot lie - Titus 1:2 ESV “in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began and it is His words to His creation.”
No other book in the history of man has had anywhere close to as many attempts to eradicate it while remaining intact as the Bible.
In other words, God moved through the Holy Spirit in men’s lives inspiring them to write exactly what He would have them say. Then God, in an amazing display of love and providential care for us, His human creation, kept the written words of the Bible intact for over 2000 years enabling us to read about, come to know, and search out the only way to spend eternity with Him in heaven.
However one of the keys to accepting the Bible as the authority on who God is and how you may be saved, is to humbly approach God and ask Him to reveal His truths to you. He knows you intimately.
The Bible says He formed you in your mother’s womb- Psalm 139:13 ESV – “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother\'s womb” and knows the very amount of hairs on your head- Matthew 10:30 ESV – “But even the hairs of your head are all numbered” and He desires you to be reconciled with Him - 2Peter 3:9 ESV – “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”
He loved you so much that He sent His only Son to be the sacrifice required to appease His just nature. John 3:16 ESV - \"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Yet this will only happen if you seek and ask. He will not force you. If you honestly begin to seek Him He will be faithful to what His Word promises many places in the Bible, one specific example is this Old Testament passage- Deuteronomy 4:29 ESV – “But from there you will seek the LORD your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.” God says he will reveal His truth to those who want to know. John 16:13 ESV – “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”
The Bible states that God’s Truth is crazy or senseless to those who don’t care - 1Cr 1:18 NASB “For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” So you have a decision to make- seek to understand and accept God and the Bible’s authority or suppress the truth in unrighteousness as stated many will do in these following verses in the first book of Romans: v 18 ESV – “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth” v. 19 ESV – “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them” v. 20 ESV – “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse” v. 21 ESV – “For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened” and finally v. 22 ESV – “Claiming to be wise, they became fools”….
Now I know that I have included much Scripture in our discussion but to know anything about anything we must read and study the book that is the authoritative guide to the subject. Using Scripture to prove the Bible’s authority simply makes sense. Just I would use an owner’s manual for a car to learn about that car, I can use God’s word through the Bible to know Him.
Now I want to touch upon the subject of why divine revelation is reasonable. If God exists as I am suggesting, it is only reasonable that He would make Himself known to His creation. It is also reasonable that he would create us with a mind and spirit capable of acknowledging His presence. What would be the point of our existence otherwise?
There are and have been numerous religions over the course of history which have all been mankind’s attempt to understand and/or appease God. History has demonstrated that mankind realizes there is an all-powerful creator as well as inherently having knowledge of his own fallen, corrupt, sinful nature. This can be seen throughout antiquity and even now in primitive cultures with their attempts to appease a god or gods through some sort of sacrifice.
In a similar way all modern religions other than Christianity strive to perform good works to mollify a god or gods in the hope of attaining entrance into heaven, or paradise or as Hinduism and Buddhism purport –nirvana, the state of nothingness. Not that we shouldn’t do good things but our goodness cannot gain us entrance into heaven. The Bible says that the very best we can do is like filthy rags in Isaiah 64:6 ESV – “We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.”
I came to the realization that I needed Jesus many years ago when I recognized what a mess I had made out of my life. I had become powerless over the circumstances governing my days. I had made a total wreck of things and was so far down that I only had one way to look which was to the foot of the cross.
This was the place where I personally needed to arrive to realize my poverty and need for a savior. Unfortunately in our country many people are wealthy, well fed, and content, therefore not realizing their need for the God of the Bible and Jesus as their redeemer. If a person doesn’t realize he is lost and guilty before a Holy and perfect Creator, why would he look to be found or saved?
May I ask you a few questions?
How many lies do you think you have told in your lifetime? What does that make you? A liar right? Have you ever stolen anything even if it’s small? That would make you a thief right? Have you ever looked with sexual desire (lust) at another person? Jesus said that looking with lust was the same as adultery in your heart. Have you ever looked with lust?
You answered yes to all three questions, so by your own admission you are a liar, a thief and an adulterer in your heart.
Would you be innocent or guilty before a Holy righteous judge?
Since you answered “obviously guilty”, would you be going to heaven or hell?
You say “hell,” does that concern you?
It should, no one wants to spend eternity in hell!
What I have just done is taken you through a few of God’s Ten Commandants. It is the holy and righteous standard that He will be judging you by on the day you die. Your conscience knows that you are guilty and that you deserve to be punished.
But if you would simply humble yourself, and seek Him, as I stated earlier, God will reveal Himself to you.
Please consider what we have talked about. I care for your eternal destiny and simply desire that you weigh the evidence for the authority of the Bible and Truth of God’s word.
