Seeking lost fellowship

Cain had no interest in the stories his mother Eve told about life in the garden. Abel listened eagerly, wanted to hear everything. At dusk Abel sat with her while the sky slowly changed color. The stars lit up. Eve shared everything that had happened on the last day in the garden; how she had been deceived by the serpent’s words. She had disobeyed God’s warning. They lost everything when they lost the fellowship he shared with them.
One evening when they ate supper, Abel suggested they should try to seek a way to find atonement. \"We must find a way back to the Creator, back to the fellowship our parents had with him before. There must be something we can bring as a peace offering.\"
Maybe the boy is right, Cain thought. But I am the one who will find the way. I have worked hard.
Cain selected the finest vegetables and fruit from his garden in a basket of reeds. It was beautiful: green and yellow, and red and white. He set the basket on a smooth stone in the middle of the field. Surely God would be pleased with his effort. He had done his best. Abel could not in any way exceed him!
Abel had not slept all night. The previous day he had collected firewood in a pile on a hill close by. There were still some glowing embers under the ashes of the fire from last night’s cooking to light his torch. He saw enough to do what he must. His favorite lamb, Faithful, followed him up the hill. What was to be done must be done now. The morning star shone brightly. Abel looked up. It was as if the star shed a tear. No, it was from his eyes as the tears came. Abel did not linger any longer. He took a sharpened stone and cut Faithfull’s throat. Blood splattered on his hands and clothes. He put the lamb’s dead body on the pile of wood on the altar he built the day before. Just as he was to light the pile of wood with his torch he was stunned by a sudden flash of light. A fire blazed high on the altar. His own torch fell off the cliff.
Cain had also risen early. He wanted to see what had happened to his offering. No one had touched it. Suddenly, when the sun\'s first rays crept over the horizon, he saw a fire flare up on the hill. The flame was brighter than any other fire he had seen before. He knew that Abel had gathered a lot of firewood for his offering. Cain had laughed at him. What would God do with all this junk? Cain had seen Abel had taken a small branch that resembled a man with outstretched arms. Abel had kept it since he was little. He had said it reminded him of the one who welcomes us back to the Garden. Cain could not understand why Abel would take that piece of wood with him up the hill. Maybe he thought he could open the gate to the garden with such rubbish. His brother was really weird. There was something in Abel’s commitment that Cain could not stand. It was as though Abel had a secret that Cain could not share.
He must go and see that fire on the hill. Before he went, he cast a glance at his own basket. What had happened? Anger rose up within him. All that he had arranged so nicely had turned into a rotten heap! He ran up the hill. Where was Abel\'s offering? The fire was gone. Abel rose from the ground just when Cain arrived. His face shone with a joy that Cain never seen before. Everything else was gone.
When Cain came closer he saw a deep furrow in the rock. It looked like a deep wound. The fire had devoured everything, but it had left a mark in the ground, the image of a man with outstretched arms that seemed to say, \"Come!\"
Cain was filled with bitterness. The hatred that had been smoldering within him flared up with a violent force. Abel\'s sacrifice was accepted and his was rejected. He must get rid of Abel!
Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. Psalms 34:5
