The Prodigal Son- Luke 15:11-32
This is a well- known parable that Jesus taught. This man had two sons. The younger son wanted his share of his Father’s inheritance, which his Father gave him. He then went away to a far away land and wasted his money on parties. When all his money was gone, a famine struck the land and this son became in want of food and a place to stay.
So, he found a citizen of that country that sent him into his fields to feed the pigs. He was so hungry he wanted to eat the pig’s food.
He finally came to his senses and realized that he had a pretty good life back at home with his Father and he was never in need of anything. Therefore, he decided to go home to his Father and repent of his sins. He did just that, however he was surprised when, his Father gave him a robe, a ring and shoes for his feet. All these things are signs of sonship. Because the younger son felt he could only be a servant and not a son. Then he killed the fatted calf and had a party for his son. When the older brother found out about the party, he would have none of it. He told his Father that he had always obeyed his Father and yet he was never given a party.
However, the Father reminded the older son that everything he owned belonged to him. He said, “ Your Brother was dead and is alive again and was lost and is now found”.
This story teaches us that God is the loving Father who forgives his children. He sees us as lost until we come to Christ as our Savior and ask for his forgiveness. It also teaches us that God is waiting for us to come to him for forgiveness. He wants us as his children.
