On Dying to Self
The Apostle Paul proclaimed, “I have been crucified with Christ;
“It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me!”
This means I must identify with Christ’s life and especially His death,
And in turn put to death my dreadful and sinful nature…
Yes, crucify it on the cross
Where Jesus Christ was cut to the core two thousand years ago
For our crimes.
No longer must I heed the harkening of my heart to do evil.
No longer do I need to listen to the longings of my flesh
Which is at war with God.
For as the Apostle Paul said, “Nothing good dwells in my flesh!”
Yes, I am on the precipice of a new principle—
That is, living for Christ, instead of my sinful countenance
And dying to the desires of the old man that is still in me.
It means living, breathing, walking, talking
As Christ did and still does—and letting Him live His life through me.
Now, it won’t be easy,
And it will take some time,
But the ways of God are worth it.
I must mortify myself—that is, all the deeds and desires of my dastardly flesh,
All that conflicts with God’s perfect will for my willful life, and for those in my life;
And to chase and choose His will over mine.
And then—and only then can I truly live the precious, abundant life Christ promised.
Only then will I deserve all He desires for me.
Only then will I find my true self…
Yes, this will take time, troubles, and tears,
But it will be worked out in co-operation with Christ
Who is in me now.
For with God, all things are possible. Right?
Yes, resurrection power is in me to sucker-punch my flesh into submission,
To render it to God’s will.
I now want what God wants in me and through me—
That is, to live a life of love, sacrifice, compassion, mercy, empathy—
All the things Christ represents…
Devoid of self-seeking, self-centeredness, and self-absorption…
And so, I offer my body as a living sacrifice to the One who sacrificed Himself for me.
Yes, the God who gave up the Ghost for me is the God of undeserved grace I now want to give in to.
So, I give my heart, soul, mind, and strength
To the One who loved me, and who gave Himself for me,
So that I could be set free from the fetters of my flesh…
It is no longer about me now:
It is about others.
It is about their spiritual needs and their spiritual destinies.
It is about esteeming others as more important than myself.
It is about looking out for number one—that is, others!
I am number two now, just as Christ was when He walked through this wearisome world.
Oh, why has it taken so long for me to recognize that realization?!
“O LORD, help me to fork over my flesh to you
“And to die to self, so that Your desires can live through me?
“Only then will I truly know the truth You spoke of…
“Only then will Your truth truly set me free…”
