He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children. Matthew 15:35-38 NIV
Just as Christ, for the second time, fed a large crowd, in need of nourishment, we are provided with the spiritual nourishment we need daily, within God’s word.
Notice, first, that Christ gave thanks before distributing the food. When we go to Jesus in prayer, do we first thank Him for all that He provides, before we ask? Do we take time to praise the Father and Him? This we should certainly do.
I have noticed that if I go a day now without reading God’s word, I feel as if something is truly missing within me. I feel as if I have been deprived of nourishment which I need, nourishment for my heart, mind, and soul. This world is full of many challenges. Many circumstances are far beyond my control. I need, we need, the nourishment that we can only get from immersing ourselves in God’s word. We need this nourishment along with our time in prayer with Him.
Just as Christ showed concern for that large crowd, which had been with Him a few days, knowing they needed nourishment to survive, so He also cares for us, wanting us to be nourished by the word of God and time spent with Him. What a wonderfully loving and caring Father and Son we have.
