When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.” “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment. Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:14-20 NIV
Jesus comes down from the mountain, having been transfigured to, in part, strengthen the faith of the three disciples He took with Him, and finds that the remaining disciples did not possess enough faith to drive out an evil spirit from a child.
I can almost see the frustration in Jesus at the lack of enough faith on the part of His disciples, and, even of us today.
Why is it we lack the faith even the size of a mustard seed? This question is not easily answered. I wonder if it might in part be that we think of a seemingly impossible task that is in our hands, and we focus on that which we can or cannot do rather than just allowing the Lord to totally use us as a vessel to accomplish that which needs to be done. If we look at it as us just being the vessel, and the Lord working through us, then we should be able to let go of the doubt, as it is no longer us who is trying to accomplish the task, but, it is the Lord working through us. Don’t we know that what is impossible for man is not impossible for God? Is what we’re seeking meant to bring glory to God through it’s accomplishment? If so, then why would Christ not allow it to be done?
Be a vessel. Let Christ work in and through you. And, let go of that doubt! With Christ, all is possible.
