Building a Legacy
Franklin Graham recently posted this on Facebook:
While I was in California this week, I saw a very sad obituary in which a woman’s children said the world is a better place without her. That’s heartbreaking! When your time to die comes, what will your family say about your life? And most importantly, what will God say? Will He say, “Well done good and faithful servant” or will He say, “I never knew you; depart from me”?
Now is the time to think about the impact your life is having on others. And now is the time to make sure that your sins are forgiven and that you have trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior so that you will spend eternity in Heaven in the presence of God.
How will you be remembered? What will your children or grandchildren remember most about your time with them? What have you done to make a difference?
Ecclesiastes 10:1 “As dead flies give perfume a bad smell, so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor”.
The Bible is full of real examples of those who blew it sometime in their life. The one attributed to writing Ecclesiastes, Solomon went from being a man of God to worshiping idols after his lust for women tarnished his eternal legacy. His father David as a teenager started on his legacy when he took down Goliath, later he allowed sin to take control with his lustful desire of Bathsheba and arranging the death of her husband.
A lustful desire, watching pornography, drugs & alcohol, gambling, each step moves one closer to doing something that once discovered can ruin a lifetime of building one’s reputation. A perfumer takes much skill, training, experience only to have your final product ruined by a deaf fly.
I want my family to remember me as a Man of God who made his living in the insurance business! Not an insurance agent who went to church on Sunday. I want to live 2 Timothy 2:2 and Matthew 28: 19-20 so after I leave this earth, I will leave behind men who were brought along by my efforts to encourage their spiritual journey.
We need to be intentional, disciplined, and faithful in our efforts to not only disciple others but walk the talk about our faith. Do you spend as much time with God as you do in front of your TV, watching football, enjoying your favorite hobby? Is your giving generous of both your money and time?
So, what does it take? Is showing up on Sunday at Church enough? So many miss the true blessings of experiencing the fruit of the spirit as described in Galatians 5:22. The music you listen to, the books you read, the TV you watch, the movies you pay to see all represent how your heart reacts when God shows you an opportunity. Are you willing to invest your time to mentor a young man? Disciple a new Christian? Send a youngster to a Christian Camp for a week?
As a Lay Pastor, no degrees, no seminary training but a man who was discipled for years, I am blessed! I want to start my day with Bible reading and 4-5 devotionals, a time of prayer. This first hour each day has become as necessary as eating or breathing, it’s a part of my life. You will not be able to relate unless you start, try it and be blessed too!
The chances of failure are much less when you have God watching your 6 all day. Invest in someone and this will be a growth experience for you as well as the person God sends your way. Will you know what to do, will there be questions you cannot answer…scary huh? With Christ you can do all things. Philippians 4:13.
I welcome any questions about how to start, books to use, venues I utilize for meeting, contact me @ [email protected]
