“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, he has anointed me to proclaim good news. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Luke 4:18 ESV)
After Jesus’ baptism, the Spirit led him into Judea’s wilderness. There, he would face Satan’s wicked terror to the fullest extent. Without delay, Jesus fasted forty days and nights. And surely he felt exhaustion plus loneliness throughout his core. Of course Satan watched Jesus’ every twitch, readying himself for the kill. To paraphrase Charles Spurgeon, “it’s when you’re in God’s will and doing it, that the Devil shows up to destroy”
Leaving the lonely dessert, Jesus returned to his hometown Nazareth. The following Sabbath he walked inside the Synagogue to read the Scriptures. I’m guessing that his heart must have burst with compassion as he read Isaiah’s prophecy. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me to release captives and free prisoners” (Isa 61). Afterward he sat down and proclaimed to be the Fulfiller of that very passage. Infuriated, the crowd went into a crazy insurrection. Hollering ‘blasphemy, away with him’ and proceeded to kill Jesus but he slipped away through the mob. Pitiful really, that the Jewish people failed to recognize Jesus as (their) Savior and liberator from bondage.
In closing, we can ingest a page from Apostle Paul’s playbook. Though he received beatings many times, imprisonments, and left for dead, he kept God’s message alive, “Though I’m chained, God’s Word is not chained” (2 Tim 2:9) John’s gospel describes it this way, “Who God sets free is free indeed” Furthermore, we can break loose from bondage, temptations, and the snares of the enemy.
Father, thank you for Jesus’ willingness to die on the cross that rescues us from Satan’s grip. Amen.
