“Lord, if you will, you can make me clean” (Luke 5:12 NLT)
Will, generally, operates within the mind’s faculty. Therefore, it enables people to select from a variety of options. In brief, will moves the intellect to act and have a change of heart or behavior. Perhaps a true story will shed additional light.
In one of the villages, Jesus met a man full of leprosy (Luke 5). Put simply, his condition would end in certain death. In spite of that, bravery and confidence in Jesus enabled him to take a risk. He took consolation in Jesus’ ability, yet may have doubted Jesus’ willingness. Even so, he fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged for mercy, “If you are willing, you can make me whole”. At that moment in time, compassion rose up within Jesus and he answered:
“I am willing, be thou clean” (Mt 8:3).
After dark, Jesus entered Gethsemane’s Garden to pray. He pleaded with such fervency that blood vessels broke open and clots fell to the ground (Luke 22:4) Like the leper, Jesus screamed for mercy:
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me”
“Jesus was not asking to be released from the purpose for which he had come, but he was voicing the perfectly, understandable desire to avoid the agony and suffering he was about to face” (Moody Bible Commentary p. 1511).
In truth, we know God had sufficient power to deliver his Son, but was He willing? In a word, no. God planned his son’s sacrifice before time began (Rev 13:8). Basically, Jesus died and rose again that those who believe on him will live forever with him in heaven.
For God so loved He is willing "that none should perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).
Dear Father, grant us a life-changing Easter Season, Amen.
