“I set my face toward God, seeking Him in prayer” (Daniel 9:3 Amp)
Significantly, prayer is the greater work and no one will rise above his or
her prayer life. With perfect quietness of heart, listening is the beginning
of earnest prayer. Additionally, we’re afforded a safe and blessed home in
the Lord while our spiritual character develops.
To help us along, we discover Faith residing in Daniel and his three friends.
Although held captive by pagan Babylonians, they continued in prayer and
worshipping God. Miraculously, the fiery furnace did not consume the
Hebrew boys, and a den of lions refused to harm Daniel.
In detail, Daniel’s prayer began with exaltation and worship to our
covenant-keeping God of Israel. Throughout captivity, Daniel
acknowledged God as one who kept ‘loving kindnesses.’ Equally, a
lasting fulfillment of God’s special characteristic of ‘loyal love’ to
those with whom He forged a covenantal relationship. Moreover,
God’s ‘permanent everlasting love’ is tightly linked with His
forgiveness and unending mercies.
“Because of the Lord’s loving devotion we are not consumed,
for His compassions never fail, they are new and fresh every
morning. Great is your faithfulness” (Lam 3:23)
Finally, Daniel ends his prayer with a plea for God to forgive and restore
Jerusalem. Certainly, this request was based upon God’s reputation and His
merciful character, but not on any merit found in Israel. Additionally, God’s
forgiveness and restoration was not derived from human works but in
God’s grace alone.
Most Holy Father, grant internal humility within us and forgive our boast
of external greatness. Like the Israelites, we are unworthy of your loving
kindnesses. Yet, we are your sons and daughters and “no one is able to
snatch them out of Your hand” (John 10:28)
