"For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear." 2 Timothy 4:3 NLT
An event in America which occurred during March, 2020 will reshape what church will look like going forward: for the first time in our nation's history, the majority of people who profess to be Christian now will not profess Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.
Yes, that is correct. "Nominal Christians" are now the majority in the USA Christian community.*
Our Clergy have voiced concerns for decades that this would happen as churches and people continued to migrate away from the faith and seek a more post modern, socially based worship that was less restrictive upon their lifestyles. Their concern was valid, and still is, as so many of their members are no longer Christ centered. Further, more people from all generations are following suit.
The back story:
During the first quarter of 2020, a polling of 5000 adults was being made by the Barna Group for the Arizona Christian University, that determined, by the people's own admission, that 56-percent of USA Christians were now "nominal" or "notional" Christians who no longer believe that Jesus Christ is their Savior.*
I leave you to draw your own conclusions about these "nominal or notional" Christians and invite you to read the following quotation from the aforementioned report, "American Worldview Inventory 2020 – At a Glance":
"The largest segment of people who describe themselves as Christian is Notional Christians – those who self-identify as Christian and who do not embrace eternal salvation through a personal confession of sin and accepting Jesus Christ as their personal savior. Notional Christians constitute 54% of U.S. adults who describe themselves as Christian. Very few Notional Christians – only one-tenth of one percent – have a biblical worldview."*

"A nominal Christian is a person who has not responded in repentance and faith to Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and Lord. He is a Christian in name only." .. Billy Graham, addressing the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization (organized in part by Billy Graham - 1974)
