“For you have been made complete in Christ and out of His fulness have received Grace” (Col 2:10 NKJV)
Despite hours of study, it’s frustrating when the Professor marks incomplete on your final exam. Or consider a quarterback’s disappointment when he throws an incomplete pass. Whereas, a perfect throw may have won the game. In contrast, complete means undivided, unbroken, total, full, entire, and completely enriched.
It was during Apostle Paul’s incarceration in Rome that he learned of false religions creeping back into the Church at Colossae. Thus, rather than emphasizing what the Colossians lacked, he stressed what Christ had already accomplished for them. Therefore, as God-man, Christ is uniquely suited, by means of His bloody death on the cross to reconcile all things to God.
Patiently, Paul explained the only alternative. Namely, Christ’s transformation of their lives. In detail, the apostle stressed that we should have the mind of God. Additionally, the goal of his instruction to the Colossians was to present every person ‘complete in Christ’.
“We will have power, together with all the saints, to comprehend the length, width, height, and depth of His love. To know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge that we may be filled with all the fulness of God” (Eph 3:19 ESV).
As believers we have the mind of Christ. Not through vain glory, but relying on His purity. To clarify, He alone fills us to overflowing, ‘we have been filled up in His fulness’. The two are bound together, in that we are equipped in Christ to live a holy life.
Upon reflection of Christ’s sacrifice we are cleansed. Clearly, He is fulness Himself and we are filled from Him. Better, Christ is filled with God and we are filled with Christ.
