"Prayer does not change God, it changes me" .. C.S. Lewis
Psychologists and media opinion polls tell us that people are praying more now amid the uncertainties of the Covid-19 pandemic (94% of American adults have prayed at least once in the past three months), but the one aspect of this increase that is not being questioned is: How are they praying?
Unlike corporate prayers of the past century, where the members of a congregation would join together to pray the same prayer aloud, the trend today among praying adults is praying alone (92% by choice) and praying silently (82%).* That indicates there has been a large shift in the most common faith practice in America.
Although the sounds of collective or corporate prayer are diminishing, adults praying while away from their churches is increasing. between the most active church attenders and unchurched adults, both of which are just as likely to pray to God (Churched - 89%, Unchurched - 88%)
The Churched and Unchurched (NONES) who pray, do so through their interpretation of who "God" is: 50% pray to Jesus, 27% pray to God, and 23% pray to the Holy Spirit.
There is no one reason why American adults have changed their prayer preferences and habits to this extent in less than 50 years, but just as the minor but constant change in our "preferences" of what we wanted to see "church" become, this same type of departure from traditional thinking and practices is what has led us to becoming a Christian minority who prays silently and alone.
