“Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.” (I Peter 2:16-17)
He came down from his gold throne
Walking around he began to moan
The Emperor then begins to speak
From his usual authoritative peak
Why have my people forsaken me?
For all I’ve done to keep them free
My people now have no timely taste
They are leaving me in my disgrace
They cling to their only one good book
To my dictates they will not overlook
They all go kneeling and talking above
Talking only to the One they all love
Forgetting me their earthly sworn king
To their pious roots they all now cling
Do I look down from my golden tower?
Do I crawl back up on my seat of power?
My voting public will no longer ever care
Have I surely lost it all in my despair?
It must be those people keeping laws
Those people fighting for a just cause
Fighting to keep the old religious right
Fighting to keep all my evil out of sight
Guess I will now retire to another sleep
Hoping for another day just not to weep
Still to be a powerful king as I onward go
Religious authority I may just overthrow
The Emperor is now my earthly name
The name to which I give all my fame
I trust you liked this fiction poem bordering on today’s reality. A sad poem of sorts, would you not say? A character so sorrowful is representing so many of today’s presiding decision-making authorities. (II Timothy 4:3-4)
I must first preface this poem blog with the following statement. Let me just say right off, I contend very seriously that any crisis involving the taking of human life is not to be taken lightly. We should all do our part in its prevention, especially this new Coronavirus pandemic. Now for my personal commentary.
The apostle Paul gives us a specific command, in honoring our authorities. (Romans 13:1-7) To this the apostle Peter also fully agrees. (1 Peter 2:13-15) And I agree, as well.
Some state governors have opened up to freedom of religion, while others have not. Why is this, I ask? Is not our Creator God, ruler over all mankind, over all states?
“Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all.”(1 Chronicles 29:11)
America’s President Donald Trump recently said that houses of worship are essential, and said, “We need more prayer, not less.” To this I shout a big Amen. As I read the dictates of the Scripture, the gathering of Christians for worship and edification, is crucial for the growth of our Christian life style.
“not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:25)
“Because men are not angels, government is necessary. Because no man stands to another as beast, government must be based on consent. The moral foundation of the Constitution is the Declaration of Independence and its principle of equal rights. Under the Constitution, government was to be limited to protecting those rights.
In recent decades, the way our government operates has departed from the Constitution. It has become less limited and our liberties less secure. At the same time, true civic education in American-education in the Constitution- has largely died out.” (Larry P. Arnn, President, Hillsdale College). To this I also shout a big Amen.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free excise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of people peacefully to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. (Amendment I, The United States Constitution)
So, what is the solution to this pandemic predicament? First, we should not overlook the impertinence of faith (Hebrews 11:1,6) and not be fearful. (2 Timothy 1:7)
Next realizing that God is no respecter of personals, nor should we be. (Acts 10:34) We should offer up prayer, first for ourselves, and then for those believing and non-believing authorities. God is ready and able to save our land. All fifty states.
“if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.15 Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place.” 2 Chronicles 7:14)
I trust you agree. If so, let us all pray together. Amen!
