The Poor In Spirit
“Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven”
(Matt 5:3 KJV)
There are few things that matter more than humility. Unashamedly,
the ‘poor in spirit’ realize their need for a Savior. Like a flower unfolding,
the meek receives overflowing mercies and grace to help in their time
of need. At heart, people who are ‘poor in Spirit’ admit inadequacy and
the dire need for a Helper.
“Let us come boldly to God’s throne of grace for help
in time of need” (Heb 4:16)
By replacing ‘poor’ with the word ‘humble’ we get a better grasp of the text.
In detail, the Lord is teaching that we must humble ourselves in His presence.
If we are proud, arrogant, or self-satisfied God will not hear our petitions.
“God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble”
We find this ‘good news’ in Matthew’s gospel. In fact, the Sermon on the
Mount is probably the most famous of all the teachings of Christ. Jesus’
purpose for the Beatitudes presents several virtues that should characterize
those who are ready for the Kingdom.
Basically, blessed means ‘deep joy or exhilaration’. Other components are those
who experience divine favor. The focus here seems to be the recognition of one’s
spiritual bankruptcy. Or rather, those who have nothing of their own to offer God,
inherits the kingdom.
The ‘poor in spirit’ admits spiritual inadequacy and cast themselves on the mercy
of God. Additionally, they are the opposite of the arrogant, and self-righteous who
boast of their own goodness. They look to the Lord for justice, mercy, and
deliverance, and not to themselves.
*Dear Lord, forgive our haughty attitudes and help us to humble ourselves
that we may glorify your Name above all else. Amen
