Author requests article critique
One only need surf the Internet to see any number of old clichés, using the root word “money.” Have you heard the old saying, “Follow the Money?”
Here's an Internet definition of this phrase; 'Follow the money" is a catchphrase popularized by the 1976 docudrama film All the President's Men, which suggests political corruption can be brought to light by examine money transfers between parties." (Wikipedia)
When just a mere lad, Dad would bribe me into taking a Saturday night bath by paying for my Saturday afternoon double feature cowboy movie, which by the way was a whopping thirty-nine cents! I ask you; how many times have you coaxed your young ones into good behavior by tickling their palms with a little change? Yes, we’ve all been there and done that. So, do we all “follow the money” when questioning our public officials’ behavior at all levels of government?
No wonder our Creator God, doesn’t look too favorably on some actions taken by our governmental officials.
So, this fiction-generated blog asks, was money intended to influence those powers-to-be? Obviously, it didn’t work. Now sit back and enjoy this short story titled “The Money That Didn’t Talk.”
Thanking everlasting Providence for the upcoming weekend, I don’t mind telling you what an exhausting, boring week I had at the Bible college. My twenty-plus years of professorship seemed to be playing havoc with these old, tired nerves of mine. Why these young preacher boys want to mix religion with politics is beyond me.
How can these young pastoral students be so unengaged with respect to their doctrinal studies? After all, one of these days, Lord willing, they will be answering to a difficult Board of Elders.
Pulling in the garage, I couldn’t wait to get in, take off my shoes, relax in my favorite battle-worn recliner and partake of my usual evening cold soft drink and big chocolate chip cookie. Next, I would head to bed, hoping not to have another of my dreams or visions, as some call them. This nightly ritual seemed to be happening all too often these days.
I had just gotten settled with my cookie and drink when the room filled with smoke. Out of the smoke came a mysterious looking character. He was dressed in typical Bible clothing. Not saying a word, he quickly grabbed my hand and we were off. Is this a dream, is it a vision? Just who is he, where is this stranger taking me
Immediately, we were translated square into the middle of a large metropolitan city. We found ourselves standing on a well-kept lawn inside a large black fenced barrier. In front of us was a large stage, apparently prepared for some sort of gathering.
In the background was a big pillared, white mansion. A large group of people were sitting comfortably in front of this stage, awaiting some sort of event to take place, cameras and note pads in hand. Then the scene suddenly and drastically changed.
A. well-dressed, blond-haired, stately gentleman walked out on the porch of this mansion and waved to the sitting crowd, then walked down the lawn and onto the stage. He was holding a Bible in one hand and carrying what looked like a copy of the U.S. Constitution in his other hand. As he approached an ornate podium fitted with a large official seal, the crowd instantly stood in respect.
This dignified gentleman was dressed in a blue business suit, white shirt and big red tie. He was flanked on either side by two decorated military officers, their four-starred uniforms crisp and medals gleaming in the sunshine.
Suddenly, appearing on stage behind this group was a short oriental gentleman, wearing a mask and carrying a big plastic bag visibly full of money. When he saw the crowd assembled, this man burst into a wide smile and he waved the bag of money in the air. His unusual ploy seemed to really upset the dignified audience. It was as if the man thought his money would talk.
The objective of this little man was rather obvious. Looking straight towards the distinguished speaker, he waved his bag of money again, while giving out another grin. However, his purpose for being there was unsuccessful. It failed the test with this patriotic, trustworthy government official. This scene didn’t last long, however.
At the command of the leader, the two military men grabbed the stranger by the arms and set about carting him off to jail. As they walked off, his money bag mysteriously disappeared. As the distinguished leader turned around to continue his press conference, he was instantly greeted by a change of heart in the news corps. All were seen standing, and clapping their approval. This reaction seemed to be as the government official thought it would be.
The event was going very well until a large, contentious crowd of rowdy demonstrators emerged out of nowhere. They were shouting X-rated superlatives liken to the signs they carried.
After realizing they could not penetrate the fixed barriers nor contend with the police lined behind these barriers surrounding this mansion, they slowly disbanded their original objective of distraction and left the area, without incident under the wary eyes of the surrounding police.
Even so, this leader could not help but give a patriotic observation on this would-be rebellious insurrection, to the sudden standing ovation and roar of the seated audience.
Looking around for a comment from my strange Bible character companion, I discovered that he was gone, as well as my vision. Game over, the vision ended as quickly as it started.
I was still sitting in my recliner, the partly-filled drink and a piece of cookie still on my desk, by my computer which was blinking up a storm. I pushed the on key, and to my surprise the American flag appeared on the screen, along with the playing of the National Anthem. What did I do next? You bet your life, after seeing the most unusual political performance of my lifetime, I couldn’t help it. I stood tall and joined in with the singing of our National Anthem.
With the blinking of my computer, my future drastically changed as well; the vision accomplished its purpose. My computer picture suddenly changed. There, all laid out on the screen was the outline of my next classroom assignment, including the program title and Bible reference work.
I can hardly wait to see how my doctrinal students interpret and relate this catchy title “The Money That Didn’t Talk” to today’s current events. So, I quickly went to work. Amen!

My dear old preacher Daddy was one for holding to the Scriptural truths of America’s tradition. Oftentimes he would fit them into a little humor to get the message across, like this famous saying of his:
“I hung up a copy of the U.S. Constitution on my wall. I call it the Decoration of Independence.”
My thoughts, strictly my opinion, are we Americans, by the very nature of our Red, White and Blue blood, are basically honest by design. You see, we were all created in the very image and likeness of God. (Genesis 1:26-27) We all have a soul, a mind, and a spirit, and we all love our freedom, given by God via our founding fathers.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness - That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” (The Declaration of Independence)
America was founding according to godly principles.
“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separation and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.” (The Declaration of Independence)
Here is a concluding commentary by Larry P. Arnn, President of Hillsdale College.
”The framers of the American Constitution combined the best political ideas of the past with innovations in what “The Federalist” called an improved science of politics, federalism, separation of powers, and checks and balances. Doing so, they created a form of government which had in the words of James Madison, 'no model on the face of the earth.'
Because men are not angels, government is necessary. Because no man stands to another as God to man, or as man to beast, government must be based on consent. The moral foundation of the Constitution is in the Declaration of independence and its principles of equal rights. Under the Constitution, government was to be limited to protecting those rights.
In recent decades, the way our government operates has departed from the Constitution. It has become less limited, and our liberties less secure. At the same time, true civic education in America-education in the Constitution has largely died out.”
The first three words of our Constitution are “We the people.” Yes, that about sums it all up, including this little fiction blog.
“We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” (The Preamble to the Constitution)
So, my friend, with God’s eternal blessings, with the Scripture’s blessing of authority, namely those who enforce the laws of our land (Romans 13:1-7), I rest my case. God Bless America, Amen!
