The seat of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, a town South-West of Nigeria, is no doubt a revered post in Yorubaland. It has been a non-hereditary position right from inception.
The late Oba Isaac B. Akinyele happened to be the first educated Olubadan, and the second Christian to ascend the throne.
During a weekly programme, tagged Heroes Past on Cross-Fire Radio, an evolving online radio in Ibadan, Deaconess Victoria Oluwafunmilayo Mala, who happens to be the grand-daughter of the late Oba I. B. Akinyele, unfolded some interesting revelations about her grandfather, Oba Isaac B. Akinyele.
My mother, late Chief Mrs. Fehintola Ajibola Ogunbitan, was the first grand-daughter of Oba Akinyele. My grandfather was generous, caring, loving and prayerful.
She emphasised how he took over people’s problems as his, until such problems were well solved.
‘If they bring any thief to him, he would appreciate the people and allow them to go. He would then face the thief, preach to him and give multiple of what he had stolen back to him. He knew that if the thief was not hungry, he wouldn’t have stolen!
When asked how the king was able to combine priesthood with royalty, she had this to say.
Papa was the founding father of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Ita-Baale, Olugbode, Ibadan, the missionary headquarters. He was a pastor and a king; he did the two together and he was successful.
Each time he was going to C.A.C., Olugbode, he would branch at my father’s house, come up the stairs (my father’s house was a storey building), pray for us and give us money. Papa had time to pray and to write so many books like: Onilaja Nla; Elo ni owo re ni banki orun? The Great Work of Mediation; Akojopo Iwaasu; Exhortation on the Lord’s Prayer, Divine truth, etc.
How did the late Oba Akinyele ascend the throne?
He became the Olubadan through the appreciation of Ibadan people, who made him the Balogun, he then rose to the place of king. It has been ordained from heaven, and the Lord fulfilled His promise. The chieftaincy was given to papa in appreciation of getting Ibadan from Oyo Alaafin. Ibadan was under Alaafin - he dictated the control. But as we were told, papa and one elder prayed and went to Oyo to give a letter to Alaafin. We were told that it was in the habit of Alaafin that anybody who comes into his palace will not return or that s/he will get home and die.
So, when papa got to the palace in Oyo, the king was informed and he welcomed him. That Alaafin had someone called Awonipa, (he who looks on a man until s/he dies). According to the history that we heard, the Awonipa saw a bottle of water, (Omi-Iye) on papa’s head. As papa delivered the letter, he was looking at papa as if he should finish his life in the palace, but he returned to Ibadan safely and nothing happened. Then they said, “Ah! The God of Akinyele is a good God! And in appreciation of the risk of life he took to go to Oyo and come back safely, the Ibadan people gave him a honourary chieftaincy title; he was made a quartermaster – Balogun.
You know when someone becomes a Balogun; he has to be given a staff; not just an ordinary one, but a charmed one with rituals. But they said, “Akinyele, we know that you are a Christian; make any staff you like.” It was made and prayed upon in the vestry for around twenty one days - he did not use a charmed staff.
When asked about his counsel for the Church, she emphasised the power of unity, as there is nothing like denomination in heaven.
Let’s bear with each other, even if there is grudge, remember the Lord’s Prayer – “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us”.
She also emphasised the importance of prayer and helping the poor.
When asked about his counsel for the youth, she said:
One problem you youths have is that you don’t want to wait for your turn. You want to become what you will become in 10 years in a day. Wait for God’s time in your life, and don’t dictate for Him. Pray and seek His face.

What will you be remembered for after you might have gone the way of all the earth? Will your posterity ever appreciate your impact on them or will they look at your grave and spit on it?
As you go about your daily routine in the office, I hope you know that some people had occupied that place before you, and that you will not be the last? So, tread carefully. You do not have excuses for your underhanded practices.
Let me quickly remind you that during the first national census in Nigeria, between 1921 and 1923, Isaac Akinyele was appointed the Chief Census Clerk for Ibadan, under P. A. Talbot, the District Commissioner (Oshun, 1981:76). Isaac Akinyele was diligent and forthright.
Why should you be given a key role in conducting national census or election, only for you to alter or manipulate figures at the appearance of hard currencies?
In addition to his numerous religious responsibilities, Isaac Akinyele was also a practicing politician. He was a supporter of the defunct Action Group during the political turbulence that characterised Ibadan politics during the early to mid-1960s. This was the time that Ibadan politics was controlled by the N.C.N.C., under the “Wild Wild West” and the notoriety of the “Weti e”.
In all of these, Isaac Akinyele was a pacifist, always advocating for a peaceful resolution of issues, particularly during the political instability and violence in the Western Region. (Oshun:2014).
What is your disposition to politics? Is politics, for you, a tool for nation building or an avenue to unleash terror on the citizenry and to enrich your pot of stew? Isaac Akinyele was a different breed of politician!
In his lifetime, Isaac Akinyele was able to seamlessly combine priesthood with royalty. He lived as a good father and a praying man.
Why should the tight schedule of your job take you farther away from your home and your God?
