Daily meeting my Prince
Having a devotional time very day is vital in a Christian’s life if he wishes to grow in the Lord. There are numerous blessings and countless lessons that we can enjoy when we obey God’s command to read the Bible and spend time with Him daily. While reading the Bible is only one of many important Christian disciplines; it plays a great part in our overall relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. I would like to share three reasons for which I make it a priority in my life to read the Bible every day.
First of all, while reading the Bible the Lord is able to give us His hope and joy. Many bleak situations have been made joyous because of time spent with the Lord. During the time that Paul and Silas were locked in a dungy prison they were still able to exemplify the joy and peace of the Lord. How could this be? While weak Christians may let circumstances affect their attitude and outlook on life, Christians who spend time in God’s Word are able to draw on His strength and find joy, hope, and peace in every situation.
Secondly, abiding in God’s Word provides us the strength necessary to resist the devil’s attacks on our life. While Jesus was in the desert His one defense against satan’s temptations was quoting Scripture. This is the only method effective against the devil’s sneaky attacks. As with Jesus, if we resist satan’s temptation, he will flee from us. How can you draw from your memory Scripture to quote if you have not spent time in the Word recently?
Lastly, spending time daily in our devotions equips us to properly counsel others. Through His Word God will enlighten us to the effects of sin, and show us how to gain the final victory over the enslaving powers of evil. To be able to see sin for what it is and recognize it in societies problems requires a discernment and wisdom only God can give. God gave Solomon wisdom when he asked it Him, so God promises to give wisdom liberally to all that ask it of Him.
A devotional time is a must for all who wish to honor God and glorify Him in their lives. As of Abraham, may it be said that we are friends of God.
