The English language is filled with words of this kind, and often we must know the context of the sentence to determine exactly what is being communicated.
The word SOW can mean to plant seeds. It can also mean a mama pig if the word is being read. If it means a mama pig it is pronounced differently while spelled the same.
To add to the puzzle of words is that the word SEW, while spelled differently is pronounced just like SOW as in sowing seeds, but not if it refers to the barnyard animal.
Are we sufficiently confused?
Words are fun. I wondered which approach to take with this week’s word PRESENT.
It can be divided to say Pre Sent.
It is a Present given, or a present received.
It means now, currently.
Interestingly Jesus will fit each of these definitions.
He was pre sent in that before the foundation of the world it was decided that He would come to Earth to redeem fallen mankind.
He is a present to us, and He gives to us His present of salvation.
He is always current and in the now. That has never been different because He has forever existed and will forever exist.
Jesus gives to us, in our salvation package, amazing things, forgiveness of our sin so that we may like original Adam and Eve, be once again freed of the command rebellion had on us and makes it now possible for us to say NO to doing sinful acts. He gives to us Holy Spirit to teach us, to comfort us, and empower us to live righteously for God.
That present to us cost Him everything, but He thought us to be worth the price.
I have often questioned why Jesus had to go into the desert following His Baptism. I have heard sermons on what each temptation meant, it sounded right but never complete to me. Matthew 3: 13-17
I have understood why God had to become a human man, because He had to be one of us to represent us in death, to be our Savior. He needed a belly button.
Only recently have I understood just what the Temptations in the Wilderness were all about and wow, it is encouraging to me: Satan was allowed to tempt Jesus to use His God authority, but Jesus refused. He quoted The Word instead. Jesus had to endure the temptations as a human, just like us, so that He could qualify to represent us to the Father and then become the unblemished sacrificial Lamb, dying so we would not have to die, but live forever with Him, but also to make it possible for us to be His representatives on the earth while we live here. Luke 4:1-13
But that is not the end of His mission, He died and rose from death and in doing so gives to us Holy Spirit, One just like Himself to live within us and He empowers us to be just like Jesus. Oh yes, Jesus said, “All power is given unto Me in Heaven and in Earth.”
He also said to His disciples, that’s us who live our lives like He lived His, “Power I give unto you.” The power that Jesus had to refuse Satan’s temptations now belongs to us. The power Jesus had to overpower the evil ones is now ours when we follow in obedience to Jesus. Luke 10: 19
“The Kingdom of God is within you.” Jesus said that. Luke 17:21
There is yet another meaning for the word PRESENT.
We are so blessed by what Jesus has done for us that we must PRESENT ourselves unto Him, a living sacrifice, which is our reasonable service to Him, because He has given us every blessing He has, and ALL of Himself. He IS the Source of our every breath and our every need. Romans 12: 1
