Leaning over the coffee shop table, Jeff frowned. “I have noticed a certain tension between you and Amy as of late.”
Sighing, Brett sipped his coffee. “She’s involved in so many things she doesn’t seem to have any time for me, for us, anymore. Amy’s just so terribly busy.”
Jeff smiled. “And you aren’t?”
“Sure; I’m busy too.” He shrugged. “I suppose you’re right. It’s not just Amy, it’s both of us. Our lives are so complicated; we both have stressful careers, we’re active, or should I say, overly active, in our church. We have family and friends to keep up with as well.”
Laughing, Jeff sat back in his chair. “Are you insinuating that I’m adversely affecting your marriage?”
Managing a smile, Brett nodded. “Yeah, Jeff; it’s all your fault. Seriously, my marriage is in trouble and I don’t know what to do about it.”
Pulling his billfold out, Jeff removed a business card and slid it across the table to Brett. “I think this might help you.”
Picking up the card, Brett glanced at it, and then at Jeff, eyebrows raised.
“Trust Jeff, your very wise friend.”
Sitting beside Brett in the car, Amy stared at the weathered sign. “Back to the Basics Cabins? This is your surprise? With all I have to do, you dragged me out here in the middle of nowhere for the entire weekend? You know my marketing plan is due next Friday!”
“Just give it a chance, honey, that’s all I ask. Wait here; I’ll check us in.
“Fine; I’ll get out and stretch. The three-hour drive was a bit much.” Stepping out of the car, she stretched. Glimpsing water down the hill through the trees, she walked closer. A view of a beautiful pristine lake emerged. Transfixed, she watched the rays of the summer morning sun dance across wave crests. “Beautiful,” she murmured.
Footsteps approaching, she turned to see Brett, mouth agape, staring past her at the shimmering lake. “Yeah, Brett; gorgeous, huh?”
Nodding, he waved down the trail. “Wait until you see our cabin! If it’s half as nice as it looked on the website, it’s going to be fantastic!”
Driving down the trail, Brett angled the car up to the cabin’s front deck. Retrieving the luggage, he unlocked the door and stepped inside, followed by Amy. Glancing around at the cabin’s rustic décor, she smiled. “I have to admit, it’s really quite nice. So, what do we do now? What’s on the itinerary?”
“There isn’t one. For two whole days, we have nothing planned. We don’t have to go anywhere.”
“No itinerary? So, what do we do?”
“We relax. We sit on the deck overlooking the lake and savor a glass of wine. We enjoy just being together. No distractions, just the two of us. No phone calls, no email, no faxes, no meetings. We get back to the basics of marriage, our love for each other and our love for God.”
Amy bit her lip. “I just remembered; I need to text my assistant about the planning meeting on Tuesday.”
Reaching over, Brett gently took the cell phone from her hand. “No, you don’t. See that jacuzzi in the corner? It’s calling us.” He cupped a hand over her ear. “Can’t you hear it? It’s saying ‘come and immerse yourselves in my bubbling embrace.’”
Tilting her head, she listened, a smile spreading across her face. “Now that you mention it, I do hear it.”
Soft jazz playing on the deck’s speakers, moonbeams played across their flush faces as Amy and Brett slow danced. Gazing into Brett’s eyes, Amy smiled. “Coming here was a great idea; I’m really glad you brought me.”
“Well, I hate to admit it, but you weren’t my first choice. I asked several other women, and they all turned me down. Your friend Chloe; Janelle, your hair stylist; your Aunt Alice…”
Grinning, she shook her head. “Oh, just stop.”
Pulling her close, he whispered, “Honey, I just wanted to…to…”
“You wanted us to get back to the basics, and you were right to do so, oh husband of mine. We have plenty of time, love; the night is very, very young.”
