Dismal thoughts crept through her mind. A gloomy cloud of depression loomed over her like an unwelcomed visitor. And today, without hope, she was convinced the day would turn out to be like any other.
She looked across the room into the cloudy antique mirror, barely able to make out her reflection. If only I could feel alive again.
Memories took her back to another time and place, when morning was her favorite time of day. Bounding out of bed before the sun came up and the birds were starting to sing, she was always eager to begin the day. With an agenda prayerfully planned, first thing on her list was spending time in the word with the Lord, and a fresh brewed cup of coffee. It was the sweetest time of day.
However, as she traveled over the years on a path laden with disappointments, disenchantment set it and she lost her lust for life. Now she lived in a world evolving around sorrow and past regrets. Boring and tedious, one day blurred into the next. Her life was mundane and depressing, like a drizzling cold rain.
She yearned for better days when laughter came easy and she felt madly in love with her Savior. Too excited to sleep, she would seek him in the wee hours of the morning. And He would be waiting for her to listen to her every little thought no matter how trivial it seemed. No prayer went unanswered. The creator of the universe had become her best friend. In the stillness of the night she had felt His presence and a whispering in her spirit of how much He loved her.
A constant song played in her heart for the Lord back then. It was a love song she swore she’d never forget. But somehow, over the course of time, her love had faded. She recalled what the Lord had said of the Israelites. “Hearts of this people have grown dull,” echoed in her mind. She felt deeply ashamed.
She looked through the window at the clouds hanging heavy in the sky, now fully aware she had neglected the most important relationship in her life. Yet, the only true lover of her soul was still waiting. She felt the unmistakable words impressed upon her heart. “Can we be friends again?”
She quivered with emotion. “Yes,” she whispered, “of course, I still love you…”
