When we finished our meals, the waiter asked, “Would you care for a desert?” He held out a dessert menu with pictures of some of the most tantalizing creations my taste buds could ever encounter.
I moaned. “Oh, they all look so good but…
“Let’s share a slice of cheesecake," my husband said.
“Hmm I don’t know ... I think the salad was enough.”
He crooned. “Now, half a slice of cheesecake isn’t going to hurt.”
After a long pause, the silent pressure was more than I could take. “Well ok, let’s get the cheesecake.”
Cheesecake drizzled with berry sauce soon arrived at our table. The waiter gave a courteous smile. “Anything else?”
Paul nodded. “Sure. How ‘bout a cup of coffee. We’ll need it for the road.”
“Yes Sir. I’ll have that right out to you.”
I felt content as we finished our meal and paid the bill. “That wasn’t too bad,” I commented, as we started out the door and began a leisurely stroll down the sidewalk.
After a short distance, I pointed up to a boldly colored sign posted high above a shop on a corner. “Look Paul,'Candy Heaven'. We don’t have to buy anything. Let’s just go in and check it out, I said, with a pleading tone.”
Without a pause he agreed, and we sauntered into the shop.
The sweet aroma of sugary creations welcomed us as we stepped through the doorway, along with another sign posted just inside the door. “Free samples on all bins with yellow stickers.” I gasped as I looked around the room with childlike wonder. Yellow stickers were everywhere on bins lined wall to wall, brimming with suckers, chocolate candies, lollipops, and chewy taffies of every color, and flavor imaginable. I gazed at my husband with excitement with his eyes opened wide. “Boy this is Candy Heaven.”
With the sugar rush from the cheesecake just kicking in, I felt a time clock had just started. With bins upon bins before me, I wondered how long it would take to try all the candies. Then I felt a tinge of guilt. How can these guys make money by giving away so much? But I didn’t let that thought burden me for long. The world, along with my conscience, seemed to suddenly disappear as I was caught up in the ecstasy of sweet paradise.
Void of any self-control, I chewed and gobbled my way through row after row of licorice, cinnamon, and peanut butter centered taffies. I rounded the corner and found Paul on the next aisle looking like a goat chewing the cud. “These are great!” he said, through mouthful of gooey bonbon.
I tried to dislodge the candy stuck to my teeth. “So, what are we going to buy?”
“How ‘bout some baked beans?”
“Got to get some licorice too,” I said.
“Sure, and how ‘bout some of these?” He pointed to the cinnamon taffy. “You love these. Let's get a hand full and some Mary Janes too.”
“Mary Janes… what are those?”
“Try one,” he said handing me a candy wrapped in brown paper. “We always had these when I was a kid.”
I unwrapped the square candy and popped it in my mouth. “Hmm… these are pretty good. Let’s get some.”
When we’d finally made it to the check-out counter a young man weighed our bag. “That will be twenty- five dollars.“
Paul and I eyed each other with startled looks. As I continued to push candy from my teeth with my tongue, he appeared reluctant as he paid the man the money.
I was grateful for the gift of anonymity when we finally made it out of the store. “Wow, that was rather expensive. You think we ate enough today?” We both snickered.
“Yeah, I hope I don’t get a stomach ache.”
"Yeah, me too,” I said as we continued down the street.
“Now what does the Bible say about gluttony?“
I shrugged. “Not quite sure. We should look it up. It’s probably in Proverbs.”
