Confuse them by sending them off course had been his instructions and leaving Sandra with no Map was a brilliant move.
“Good work Sequenta!” he told himself. “You'll go places!”
Sandra reached for her map. She rummaged through her things and couldn't believe it was gone.
“Well, I'll just have to rely on my instincts from now on, or even toss a coin to work out which way to go.”
Back at base, Sequenta was bragging about how he'd managed to confuse Sandra. But Rastalle cut him off.
“That's basic stuff Sequenta. You're a just novice, remember. Get some real sins going before you start boasting. I did magic on Roy Roper's copy of the Map. I took out the challenging parts so it all looks much easier. But it's wrong! He'll get himself into a heaps of trouble.”
The sound of flapping wings turned their heads to the sky. Quistinta, Pirateous and Nausica were flying in to base, wing-to-wing. They let out a joint screech as they landed.
“Move over all of you. We're the champions of the day! No doubt about it! Wait till you hear what we've accomplished. It's super wicked!” squawked Quistinta.
“Yes, we've managed to put thousands of The Devout off course,” added Pirateous. “We've had the Map banned in Distabia.”
“Yes,” said Nausica. “We infiltrated the Powerful Assembly of Distabia and whispered into the ears of the leaders. We told them the Map was stealing power away from them. We said that it encouraged people to give their first loyalty to a higher power, rather than them. And they fell for it. They brought in a new decree banning the Map. They even got the police involved, going door to door and confiscating Maps. We just watched and laughed. They are so full of self-importance.”
Belzarda, the chief, strode to his throne and held his black sceptre high. The demons fell silent and sank to their knees.
“You've done well fiends. But not well enough! Much, much more needs to be done to put a halt to the power of the Map. Get thinking! No sleeping till you have some new schemes. And I'm watching!”
Back on the bush track Sandra Stevens struggled on alone, with no Map to guide her. She faltered. She sank down onto the ground and sobbed. Yet, something within her spirit stirred, bringing to mind a part of the Map she had learnt long ago. So she cried out to the One who drew the Map and she knew that he heard her. She felt him leading her back to the fellowship of the other Devout Ones. She felt his presence and encouragement. Sequenta's efforts were thwarted. Watching on, he knew he desperately needed a better plan.
Meanwhile Roy Roper found himself on dead-end paths and swampy bogs. The 'easy' paths were anything but easy. He felt the joy of his walk slipping away as cynicism crept in. Was it even worth trying to keep on the path? Something seemed to have stolen his faith away, but yet he hung on. Rastalle watched on and willed him to falter. So far his project was only half working. But he had more devilish tricks up his sleeve. He would bide his time.
And the people in the kingdom where Maps had been forbidden grew stealthy. They hid the Maps when the police were coming. They cut the map into small pieces and shared them out amongst themselves. They met secretly and listened to their leaders explaining the way to go. And their numbers grew and grew. Quistinta, Pirateous and Nausica were furious.
Belzarda chided them, “Do better! Do better! You've got to lift your game! That Map is powerful but the One who drew it is our true enemy. More scheming you fiends!”
But the number of The Devout continued to grow through the power of the One, spreading the message of the Map far and wide. And the demons continued with their evil schemes to thwart it, but in vain.
