“Grandma, can I paddle?” One shoe is already off and the other is on its way. He's four and very proficient at shoe removal.
“Well, I guess you can if you stay right next to me and hold my hand. I'd better get my shoes off too!”
We inch our way into the icy water. Sammy wants to rush but I hold his hand tightly.
“Slowly Sammy! These rocks are slippery.”
“It's cold Grandma, and swooshy.”
“Yes, it swooshes around my feet and goes on down the creek.”
We find a log at the edge of the water and sit down, our feet dangling into the water.
“Listen Sammy. Can you hear the water clattering over the rocks? That's some of God's beautiful music.”
Sammy is remarkably silent for a minute, his head tilted, listening. My heart is full as we enjoy the sounds together.
“Grandma, where's the water going?”
“It keeps going on till it joins into a big river. Then it goes with the big river right down to the sea.”
“Is it God's beaut'ful music down there?”
“Sure is Sammy!”
“I wanna go to the sea. Please grandm....” But his sentence is drowned in a huge splash as he slips off the log into the water. I jump into the creek and grab him, pulling him out of the water.
“Grandma let go of your hand, Sammy. I'm sorry.”
“It's OK Grandma.” Sammy smiles a bedraggled smile. “I made some extra music for God.”
He shakes some drops off into the creek. “Go down to the sea and keep doing music,” he tells them.
