This, right here, was her favorite spot in the entire world. It’s where she felt God was only a breath away. It’s where she felt her prayers could be carried upon the frothy waves. It’s where she thought it must surely be a reflection of Heaven itself. And she was lucky enough to come here every day.
Life hadn’t always been this pleasant. She’d experienced the ups and downs just like anyone else. Grief. Loss. Tears. Pain. It was all there. She’d fallen. She’d picked herself up. She’d fallen again. But through it all, she’d always had the One who would never leave her. He’d never let her down or given up on her. And she’d never given up on Him.
A particularly fast wave washed up over her feet, and almost reached her calves. She smiled at the cool sensation as the breeze met her wet skin. She’d brought a book today, but it was nicer just to lie here and... be. She’d even brought an umbrella, but in spite of everyone’s warnings, she preferred to feel the sun’s rays. They were just so warm, like a gentle hug from Heaven.
Ah, Heaven. Those thoughts returned. Was the sand there just as soft as this? Was the sun just as warm? Could one hear the sound of crashing waves? Did the peace feel just like this? She had a feeling that it was all those things and then some. Oh to feel wrapped in this warmth forever. It was–
“Judith? Judith, it’s time.”
She was reluctant to open her eyes. For when she did, it was a cold, rain-streaked window that she saw. She shivered, and Tina adjusted the blanket over her shoulders.
“Fell asleep again, huh? Well, that’s okay.”
Judith pulled her withered hands in under the blanket and shook her gray head. “I wasn’t sleeping.”
“Ah, yes.” Tina chuckled as she began to wheel her back down the hall towards her room. “Went on ‘vacation’ again, did we?”
Judith glanced up over her shoulder. “You still don’t believe me.”
“I believe... you have amazing dreams.”
Dreams? Maybe. Judith sighed as she was brought into her room and assisted as she got ready for bed. “Someday those dreams will come true,” she insisted weakly.
“I’m sure they will.” Tina patted her shoulder gently. “In the meantime though, let’s just rest, okay?”
Lying back in her pillows as she was left alone again, Judith stared up into the darkness. Maybe she’d been talking about her special place too much. No one really believed her “glimpse of Heaven” story. But she didn’t mind. Going to that white shore was what saw her through these long, dreary days.
She closed her eyes for one last time. And as she heard the crashing waves, she smiled. For it really was all she’d ever imagined, and more.
